Class H

From Steam & Steel
(Redirected from H class)

Description

[edit | edit source]

The KdNS Type Dn Class H, or simply Class H is an extremely powerful 0-8-0 tank engine, tied with the Class H2 for most driving wheels in the game. It has an immense tractive effort of 44,478, making it the second strongest locomotive in the game, behind the Class H2.

It can be used as a powerful shunter due to its built-in bunker and tanks, but is best used on hauling heavy or long consists over short to medium distances. Its slow speed means the player may want to consider a Class J2, Class K1, or Class K2 with a smaller train or for long-distance trips.

The engine's sheer weight and power make this locomotive an absolute beast. Worth the price, worth the grind. It is a perfect engine for heavy hauling needs due to its extreme power and weight, but is not well suited for mainline or long distance use due to its low top speed. Nothing else in the game is able to out-pull a Class H. However, those who want a faster heavy hauling engine may want to consider a K2 or H2.

Tips and Tricks

[edit | edit source]
  • Coupling two back-to-back with a 2-axle KdNS tender will give both an increased fuel capacity and tractive effort, whilst still being easy to control by jumping between cabs. This configuration can pull ridiculously long and heavy consists, effectively functioning as an 0-8-8-0 articulated engine.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • The Class H's second and third pairs of driving wheels are "blind", lacking wheel flanges and guide spheres to allow the engine to take sharper turns without derailing. This is highly effective and combined with its short wheelbase the Class H can take surprisingly sharp turns for a long eight-coupled engine.
  • Before the Class H was added into game, the developer of the game (Gregtame) had posted footage of the Class H pulling four log cars up a 20 degree grade on the S&S Discord server, showcasing how strong is this engine is.
  • The Class H is one of two engines in the game with an external Stephenson valve gear, the other being the Class H2.
